Close your eyes. What do you hear? What sounds are around you? Do you hear voices, music, animals, machines? Where is it quiet? Where do you go to get away from noise? What experiences do you seek out to enjoy sound? What places do you avoid because they are too noisy? Sounds are mechanical waves of gases, liquids, and solids. Acoustics is an interdisciplinary science that studies sound and shapes sonic environments. Acousticians attempt to create environments that optimize acoustic performance and sound quality based on types of activities and needs. To begin to understand acoustics look at the Wave Journey first. Then explore the following acoustic activities.
