Lighting is essential in our daily lives, shaping how we perceive the world, interact with our surroundings, and feel emotionally. Understanding lighting’s various facets helps optimize our environments for study, relaxation, and creativity while contributing to sustainability. Good lighting enhances visibility, safety, and comfort; whether walking through a well-lit campus at night or creating a cozy study, lighting helps highlight our built environments and creates a sense of security and serenity. From waking up in the morning to going to bed at night, lighting influences every moment of our day.

Activity 1 – Natural vs. Artificial Lighting

Natural light, provided by the sun, is one of the most beneficial forms of lighting. It improves mood, boosts vitamin D, and helps regulate sleep cycles. However, artificial lighting steps in when natural light is unavailable. From the warm glow of incandescent bulbs to the efficient brightness of LEDs, artificial lighting is versatile and adaptable, ensuring we can work, play, and rest regardless of the time of day. This calming color is ideal for bedrooms and living spaces.

Brightness Levels Bright lighting enhances concentration and reduces drowsiness. High-activity spaces like offices and kitchens utilize brighter lighting for specific tasks. Dim lighting calms us, making it suitable for lounges, dining areas, and pre-sleep routines.

Colored Lighting Blue light encourages wakefulness but can disrupt sleep patterns if overused. Red light relaxes and helps to improve sleep quality. Greenlight is less harsh on the eyes and pleasing in transitional and meditation spaces. Lighting for Health and Well-being Dim or flickering lights cause eye strain, headaches, and fatigue. High-quality lighting reduces these risks and supports mental clarity.
