WORLD LISTENING DAY JULY 18
World Listening Day is observed every year on July 18 and encourages people to reconnect with the sounds that surround them, finding personal meaning in the everyday soundscape. The day was established by the World Listening Project to honor the birthday of R. Murray Schafer, the Canadian composer, educator, and environmentalist widely regarded as the founder of Acoustic Ecology.
Intentional listening is a valuable skill that can enrich daily life. Like any skill, it requires patience and practice, but over time it can deepen your awareness of the world around you. In an age of constant technology and endless streams of information, it can be difficult to know what deserves our attention and what can be tuned out.
The Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology is also a resource to look out for this World Listening Day. MSAE uses the role of sound and listening in natural habitats and human societies to understand and appreciate their surroundings. A big part of their practice is immersive nature sound walks to deepen their understanding of sound in the world.
On July 18, take the opportunity to slow down and listen with purpose. Pay attention to what others are trying to communicate, as well as to your own thoughts and feelings. Engage in meaningful conversations with patience and openness. Notice the sounds that shape your day, the rustling of leaves, the song of birds, the whisper of the wind, or the rhythm of footsteps along the sidewalk. By listening more closely, you may discover a deeper connection to your environment, your community, and yourself.
